08/11 – 21/12 Nightshift

Heden/Today and Bermuda Open Studios present a special exhibition together for the second time. In NIGHTSHIFT, we celebrate nightlife as a sanctuary for unlimited expression and identity formation. In this exciting exhibition, we show you the different faces of the night.

In NIGHTSHIFT, we shed light on nightlife from a varied perspective: from a collective festive event to an individual identity-defining moment. But we also highlight the night as a sanctuary for the exceptional, bizarre, and ominous, where every subculture can manifest itself without restrictions. In this way, the night gives shape to modern urban mythology. We also show the frayed edges of nightlife. Because freely indulging in friendship, identity, love, sex, and drugs can get out of hand, and then the night will turn against you and your vulnerability in all its grimness.

The artists participating in this co-production share their fascination for nightlife and reflect in a poetic and non-judgmental way on the risks that nightlife can also entail, such as addiction, crossing borders and loneliness.

In addition to a selection of works from Heden’s diverse collection, we are excited to present work by nine artists associated with Bermuda Open Studios: Adele Dipasquale, Dirk Hardy, Jesus Canuto Iglesias, Jonathan Hielkema, Koos Breen, Shana de Villiers, Silke Riis, Alice West and Femke Hoppenbrouwer.

NIGHTSHIFT was curated by Ariane Toussaint (Bermuda Open Studios) and Maarten de Leede (curator Stichting Heden Den Haag).
