De Papier Biënnale 2024 (23 juni – 17 november 2024) is een internationale tentoonstelling van kwalitatief hoogstaande en inhoudelijk sterke hedendaagse beeldende kunst waarin papier als materiaal de hoofdrol speelt.
Museum Rijswijk is a museum for contemporary paper and textile art and Rijswijk heritage. The museum is internationally known for its Paper and Textile Biennials that alternate each year. Participating visual artists come from all corners of the world to show their work. Current themes such as ‘Home’, ‘Food for Thought’, ‘Transition’ and ‘Images of Power’ challenge both artists and visitors. Despite the thematic thread that connects all works, the visual quality remains leading. Many visitors vote for their favorite artist through a public award. The public can see this artist again a year later with a solo exhibition.
In addition to the Biennials, there are always fascinating paper and/or textile exhibitions. Group exhibitions and solo presentations by Ian Berry, Madelon Hooykaas, Marianne Lammersen, Jasper de Beijer and Kate Jenkins have been reviewed in recent years.
In the field of heritage, various topics are discussed about important events, people and objects in Rijswijk. This is often accompanied by a publication. In the 19th century, the famous writer/poet Hendrik Tollens lived in the house that now bears the name Tollenshuis. This house has been extended with a new wing and together forms the charming museum in the cozy Oud Rijswijk.
The museum has a shop where you can find a great range of paper and textile objects and a great collection for children. In addition, the book assortment always has a current link with the exhibited artists and the themes of the exhibitions. Museum Rijswijk is also the place to go in the field of Rijswijk history.
Museum Rijswijk houses the cozy Tollens Café, a beautiful terrace on the forecourt and a spacious terrace and courtyard where you can relax when the weather is nice. In /DOC you can pull out a book or an art magazine and recover from the exhibition. Schools and other groups can spend time at Atelier to process what they have experienced in the exhibition. In addition, workshops are often given that tie in with the exhibition, by a museum teacher or by an exhibiting artist.
In Museum Rijswijk you can also organize a small conference, meeting or dinner. The Salon is a period room in the Tollenshuis. This is known as the most beautiful wedding location in the city. In short, there are many reasons to visit this fascinating museum for paper, textile and heritage in Oud-Rijswijk, which is easy to reach by car (free parking until 6 p.m.), bus and tram.
