Biënnale Noordwijk is a new, biennial art exposition in the public space of Noordwijk. The biennial aims to let visitors experience Noordwijk’s landscapes within the context of global societal developments. Together, the artworks form a grid connecting Noordwijk’s four municipal cores.
Biënnale Noordwijk’s first edition features twelve art installations by national and international, upcoming and experiences artists. All commissioned works were inspired by Noordwijk’s landscapes and by human and nature’s capacity for self-repair. In addition to the commissioned works, the exposition features several existing pieces.
Human and nature’s self-repairing capabilities are essential as we transition into a new phase of existence. As we exit a pandemic, we enter a world ravaged by war and global warming. These changes affect all of us. What will the effects of climate change on Noordwijk’s land- and seascape be? One thing all organisms have in common is their ability to adapt and perhaps even transform in order to survive.
The featured artists will reflect on these developments, will raise conscience and will alert us to the urgency of their subject. This coincides with their offering up new possibilities and perspectives for our future.
Biënnale Noordwijk features a total of twelve art installations, four of which have been loaned out from existing collections and eight of which have been exclusively commissioned for the biennial. The featured artists vary from newcomers to arrived bigger names. They were all given the same instruction: create a work inspired by Noordwijk’s landscapes and reflecting on nature and humankind’s self-repairing abilities within current global societal developments.
