A SPELL IN THE ALPHABET SOUP

Artist: Mike Bourscheid

A Spell in the Alphabet Soup marks Mike Bourscheid’s first exhibition in the Netherlands. The starting point of the work is the family home and its complexities.

Large wooden Jumping Jacks, stained glass houses with medicinal herbs and a new video installation introduce us to autofictive characters inspired by the artist’s mother, who raised her child as a single parent.

Mike uses costumes and props in his work to constantly change his identity, celebrating a child’s rich imagination and ways of storytelling that often get restrained by rationality later in life. Through his art, Mike examines and challenges traditional family roles, relationships and patriarchal power, ultimately questioning social conventions within our society.
